As we complete another year, we express our gratitude to the class of 2022 for their leadership and cooperation throughout these last four years. We are so proud of their accomplishments and look forward to celebrating their graduation ceremony next week at the University of Miami Watsco Center. As one class prepares to leave, the other classes prepare for finals and a well-deserved summer vacation.
There is tremendous excitement and hope for the future at Christopher Columbus High School. New facilities, resources, and technology will not only enhance our learning environment next year but help to ensure that we continue to lead our South Florida community in education for years to come.

We celebrated the grand opening of our new Marcus Lemonis and Mario Sueiras Center for Science & the Arts on April 28th with a Mass in the gymnasium celebrated by the Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski followed by a Ribbon Cutting, Dedication, and Blessing Ceremony. Mario Sueiras and his wife Sandra Sueiras cut the ribbon with the help of: Archbishop Thomas Wenski, Br. Dan O’Riordan (Marist Brothers USA Provincial), Thomas Kruczek (School President), Br. Kevin Handibode (Former President), David Pugh (Principal), Adrian Alfonso (School Board Chairman), and Tim Plummer (Building & Grounds Committee Chairman). It was a wonderful opportunity for the Columbus family to thank those involved in the development of this innovative building which has taken STEM and the Arts to a new level at Columbus. As part of the ceremony, Mario Sueiras, Thomas Kruczek and Br. Kevin Handibode were presented with original keystones from the construction in custom boxes to symbolize the strong Columbus brotherhood and unshakable foundation of Marist education. Easter Mass
We marked our return from Easter Break by celebrating two Easter Masses (one with underclassmen and the other with upperclassmen). It was a wonderful way to start the last quarter and commence work with a renewed sense of purpose. Thank you Mr. Gonzalez and Campus Ministry.

Columbus Basketball Won First State Championship
On March 5, 2022, at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland Florida, the Columbus Explorers beat the Dr. Phillips High Panthers by one point (46-45) and captured the first-ever state basketball championship for Columbus. The Panthers took the lead only once during the game for 3:33 minutes but managed to tie with 13 seconds left (44-44). In the final seconds of the game, Cayden Boozer drew a foul and hit a go-ahead free throw to put the Explorers ahead 45-44 and then forced the Panthers to inbound with 1.2 seconds left. Their star guard missed the final shot, Columbus made history. The team ended the season ranked No. 18 in the country, according to MaxPreps. The Columbus basketball program had only taken a team to a state semi-final once in 2011 and never to a state final game. To honor the Basketball Team for their historic season, the Columbus family gathered on March 9th for a Celebration of Champions on the football field. The entire student body, Lourdes Cheerleaders, faculty, staff and alumni were present and several local media outlets covered the celebration. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava made a special trip to campus to congratulate the team.

Prayer Service & Collection For Ukraine
Br. Al led a prayer service and collection for the people of Ukraine. In solidarity, our school family gathered, many wearing the colors of the Ukrainian flag, to remember all those who have died or who have left their homeland as a result of the war. The prayer service was streamed into all classrooms. Special thanks to students Anthony Mallafre and Sebastian Broche.

Massachusetts College Tour
The Mas Family Program took 39 boys on a five-day tour of universities in the Boston and Providence areas. The boys met with admissions reps at nine different colleges where they were able to meet with alumni, sit in classrooms, and have meals in the dining halls. Special thanks to Mrs. Galvez-Cuesta, Mrs. Cibran, Mrs. Amador and Mr. Hill.
Columbus students competed at the extremely competitive Florida International University High School Model UN Conference and brought home six individual awards: Enrique Villamil: Best Delegate (1st Place), Gonzalo Palenzuela: Outstanding Delegate (2nd place), James Sacher/Joseph Alonso: Honorable Delegates (3rd place), Sebastian Santana: Verbal Commendation (4th place), Sven Stumbauer: Verbal Commendation (4th place). Along with fellow Explorers, Martin Seals and Jorge Samudio, they were able to collect enough points to take home their first team trophy: Outstanding Small Delegation (2nd place for teams of 10 or less). Castaways Week Brought Fun Events for a Good Cause
In March, we held tournaments in Spikeball (20 teams), 3v3 Basketball (40 teams), Team Trivia (21 students), and Soccer (60 students) to benefit the Castaways Against Cancer. Our young men had fun and enjoyed competing all while helping to fight cancer. Special thanks to Mr. Pino, Mr. Corazon, Mr. Hermida, and Mr. Clark.

Marist Achievement Awards
Congratulations to all the students who were recognized at our Marist Achievement Awards, held this year at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Miami Airport & Convention Center. This annual awards ceremony celebrates the success of our students in academics and extra-curricular activities. Thank you to all the Columbus family members that were in attendance. Students Attended the Miami Film Festival’s Viewing of Operation Pedro Pan: The Cuban Children's Exodus
Students not only had the opportunity to watch the documentary but also view the Pedro Pan exhibit at the American Museum of Cuban Diaspora and meet several Pedro Pan refugees who came to this country as children. Special thanks to Dr. Folch, CCNN Live, Mr. Lorenzo, and Mr. Staiano.
Math Honor Society Won 1st Place at Barry University Math Olympiad
The Columbus Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta (The Math Honor Society) brought home 1st Place from group competition at the Barry University Math Olympiad. The Mathletes who brought home the 1st place were: Carlos Handal, George Kakouris, Sebastian Omedas, Christian Ebo, Nicholas Lamadriz, and Jan Andretta. Thank you Mr. Moro.
Celebrating French Culture
In March we celebrated French Language and Culture during Francophonie Week. Students worked on various Francophonie projects, French music played in between periods and a French breakfast was served to the entire school. Thank you Ms. Vessiere.

The Columbus Track Team won the Class 4A Regional Championship with 202 points (program record) and qualified 17 runners for the state championship (another program record). Block C Athletic Awards
Congratulations to all the students who received awards at the Block C Athletic Awards Banquet. The four major award recipients this year were John Starman (Sportsmanship), Fernando Mendoza (Scholar Athlete), Christian “Chip” Guzman (Athlete of the Year) and Ken Moore Jr. (Marcellin Champagnat Award). Special thanks to Ms. Vinson and her committee for their hard work in creating this special night for our student-athletes and their families.

The Black Student Organization hosted Remembrance: The Journey, a panel discussion featuring Life Coach Carroll Williams, Jimmy Hardwick (CCHS Track & Field Coach) and Jim Husk (CCHS Wrestling Coach). The group took our students back to the time of segregation and explained the obstacles and triumphs of the period. Special thanks to Mr. Campbell.

The Br. Eladio Inaugural Star Awards Honored Hard Working Freshmen Students
We held the inaugural Br. Eladio Stars Awards to recognize students who were conditionally accepted to Columbus, excelled in our summer enrichment program and achieved a 3.0 or higher grade point average in the first semester of their freshman year. The award is named after Brother Eladio Gonzalez, a longtime Columbus Counselor, for his many life accomplishments as an educator, counselor, and promoter of the young. Each student received a certificate and after the ceremony they enjoyed a celebration at Br. Eugene Plaza with cheesecake and cookies. Special thanks to Dr. Vila and Ms. Vinson.

Debaters Moreno and Stumbauer Win State Champion & Runner-up Titles
After competing at the Novice 2022 Debate State Championship, Matthew Moreno has become a State Champion in the Lincoln-Douglas category while Sven Stumbauer is the State Champion Runner-up in the Extemporaneous Speaking category. Sven also obtained second place in Extemporaneous International Speech and the third place finisher in Impromptu Speaking. The Public Forum team of Joseph Alonso and Martin Seals finished in the top ten. In late June, the team will send nine students to Nationals in Kentucky. Special thanks to Mr. De Tuya, Mr. Ciocca, and Amanda Ciocca.

CCNN Live Shined at FSPA Convention
The CCNN Team won 41 All-Florida and 10 ‘Best of the Best’ awards at the FSPA State Journalism Convention. They were named a Sunshine State Standout publication for the fourth year in a row and their ‘SOS Cuba’ won best documentary in the state. In addition, Tommy Pozo won ‘Best Talent Demo Reel in Florida.’ In addition to the 1st place Themed episode— State Champion in the Team Category, their Individual awards included: 1st place- Infographic—Sebastian Broche, 3rd place- Broadcast Commentary, 1st place- Broadcast Commentary, 2nd place- On Camera Interview, 2nd place- PTI—Manny Naccarato & Tommy Zarut, 1st place- PTI —Martinez Twins, 2nd place- Spot Anchor—Tommy Pozo, 1st place- Spot Anchor- Manny Naccarato, 1st place- Edit to the Beat, 3rd place- Podcast. Columbus Films Named ‘Best in Florida’ at All American High School Spring Film Invitational / Won Best H.S. Feature Short Film at Palm Beaches Showcase
For the 3rd year in a row, Columbus Films was selected as a finalist at the All American High School Spring Film Invitational. This year, their film Last Call to Nowhere was voted as first in Florida and in the Top 6 Films in the Country. VIEW WINNING FILM. In addition, their film The Pink Wallet won Best High School Feature Short Film in the State at the Palm Beaches Student Showcase of Films, Florida's Largest Student Film Competition with nearly 500 submissions. The Drama Program competed in the Florida State Thespian Competition in Tampa, scoring a superior rating in every category in which they competed. Marist School Presidents & Principals Meet at Columbus
The Presidents and Principals of U.S. Marist owned schools met at Columbus in April for a professional training session. The focus of the meeting was how Marist schools can continue to be Centers of Evangelization and places that meet the needs of all young people entrusted to our care, especially those on the margins.

Columbus Jiu Jitsu
Columbus now has a Jiu Jitsu Club! Moderated by Mr. de Tuya, the class has met six times and has had a student (Joseph Alonso) participate in the BJJ competition at the Tap Cancer Out Miami Open. Between Joseph and Mr. de Tuya, the Jiujitsu Club raised nearly $700 for cancer research.

Career Day
Our annual Career Day took place with a large group of alumni from various fields, professions and ages. Our dedicated alumni network is always willing to help and guide our young Explorers to help them make the best career decisions. Thank you Dr. Burrus and Mrs. Branas.
FBLA Winners From the State Conference
Our Future Business Leaders of America Club competed at the State Leadership Conference with over 5,000 students. The team of Alan Munschy, Nicolas Postel, and Christian De Villiers placed 2nd in Banking & Financial Systems and will go on to compete in National Competition. Andrew Machaka placed 5th in Business Communications. Special thanks to Mr. Corazon and Mr. Busatto.
Externship Speaker Series
It was a busy two months for the Externship Speaker Series which now hosts lectures in the new Paul Dimare Lecture Hall in the Marcus Lemonis and Mario Sueiras Center for Science & the Arts. The speakers included Albert Castro (Engineering) Melissa Marti/Kevin Testa (Social Media & LinkedIn). Jennifer Boyd-Pugh/Patricia Ramlow (Resumes & Interview Skills), Alex Seage (Technology), and our own president Thomas Kruczek. Thank you Mrs. Anderson.
Patriot Club Supporting Veterans
Patriot Club members participated in Fresh Start For Veterans, delivering household supplies to homeless veterans who have recently been afforded housing. Thank you Dr. Burrus.
ACT Student Success Program Recognizes 118 Seniors
The ACT Student Success program recognized 118 seniors by providing them with distinguished honor cords for their hard work, dedication, and outstanding academic success on the ACT and college and career readiness.
Explorers Learn from Holocaust Survivors
Students went on a field trip to FIU's Roz and Cal Kovens Conference Center to attend the Student Awareness Seminar - Remembering the Holocaust. At this transformation event, the students listened to testimonies from Holocaust survivors. Thank you Dr. Lee.
Three Explorers Honored for their VIP Summer Camp Service Projects
Alexander Herrera, Eric Alvarez and William Garcia were recognized by the VIP305 Nonprofit Organization for their service work. Together, they earned more than 700 service hours working during three consecutive summers. They helped many different service organizations in our community that directly help those in need. Joseph Pracitto Accepted Into the U.S. Coast Guard Academy
Joseph Pracitto was accepted into the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, a highly competitive academic institution which granted admission to only 13% of its applicants this year.
Delfin J. Diaz Award Marist Service Award Winner
Congratulations to Gabriel Perez the first recipient of the Delfin J. Diaz Marist Service Award which was established in 2021. The $10,000 award is given each year to a junior or senior who has passionately demonstrated his commitment to serving his community. Gabriel started the Patty Cake Foundation, an organization dedicated to his mother whose mission is to teach students basic cooking skills while providing meals to the poor and underprivileged in the community. Congratulations to Nicholas Gonzalez, the first recipient of the Delfin J. Diaz Squire of the Year Service Award. The award, which includes $1,000, a recognition medal/trophy, is given each year to a deserving student who has shown dedication to the Squires Club. Nicholas’ service project benefited close to 1,000 children from Centro Mater, St. John Bosco Learning Center, St. James Elementary, and St. Mary Cathedral. Thank you to the Delfin family, Br. Gabriel Villar Elected as the Key Club’s Florida District Governor
Senior Gabriel Villar was elected as the Key Club Organization’s Florida District Governor. He is the first student from Columbus to ever sit on the Florida District Board. He now commands over 400 clubs in the 28 Florida districts. Congratulations to Gabriel on this incredible accomplishment. Thank you Mr. Chacon.

Miami Herald Winter 2021/2022 Athletic Award Winners / Cameron Boozer Named Basketball Player of the Year
Congratulations to our student-athletes that made the Miami Herald’s All County First Team (7A-5A) listing. Cameron and Cayden Boozer (Basketball), . Dominik Iglesias and Lucas Levine (Soccer). Christian ‘Chip’ Guzman made First Team All State (Wrestling). Cameron Boozer was named Basketball Player of the Year.

Christian Ebo Earned an NEHS $2500 Scholarship
Christian Ebo Earned a $2500 Scholarship from the Nation English Honor Society for his literary analysis essay on Christy Lefteri's The Beekeeper of Aleppo. This is the second time in the past three years that a Columbus students wins this scholarship.

Diego Armesto’s Artwork featured in Grand Opening Event
Honors painting student Diego Armestro created beautiful art which was chosen to serve as the gift for the attendees of the Grand Opening Celebration of the Marcus Lemonis and Mario Sueiras Center for Science & the Arts. The artwork featured a hard edge abstraction in a limited color palette and employing multiple photographs that Diego took of the new Center. Thank you Mr. Gomez.

Congratulations to senior and film maker Julen Herreirias for being awarded at the Palm Beaches Student Showcase for his winning film The Pink Wallet. Julen won a trophy along with a $1,500 cash prize for the Columbus Films Club.
