Debate Team Shines at Grapevine Classic in Dallas, TX

This past weekend, our Columbus Debate Team traveled to Dallas, Texas, to compete at the Grapevine Classic, where nearly 90 high school debate programs from 15 different states came together at Grapevine High School.

Debating from Friday through Sunday, including a marathon day on Saturday from 8 AM to 10 PM, our Explorers put in hard work and dedication that truly paid off.
A huge congratulations to the following Explorers:
  • Varsity Public Forum: Joseph Alonso and Ignacio Chazarreta earned a prestigious bid to the Tournament of Champions in April after finishing as quarter-finalists. Joseph was also voted the 6th best speaker out of 160 competitors!
  • JV Public Forum: Sophomores Mason Ross and Diego Gonzalez finished in 3rd place overall! Tristan Handal and Ruben Guerra (in his first tournament ever) finished with a 3-2 record and narrowly missed out on the semi-finals.
  • Varsity Lincoln Douglas: Sophomore Taro Porschke went 3-3 in one of the year’s most competitive fields, narrowly missing out on elimination rounds. An outstanding performance for his first Varsity travel tournament!
  • World Schools Debate: While our World Schools Debate team did not make elimination rounds, they competed fiercely throughout the weekend. Congratulations to:
    • Lucas Rivera
    • Alexi Hernandez
    • Luke Meinhardt
    • Michael Tabares
    • Daniel Alvarez
    • Santiago Rodriguez
    • Rene Coto
    • Dante Vegliante
We are incredibly proud of all our debaters for their outstanding performances and hard work!
