Patriot Day at Columbus - Honored Alumni

Columbus hosted “Patriot Day” at the school’s “Patriot Plaza”on February 16th. The event payed tribute to its alumni who have served and are serving in our nation’s armed forces. The plaza was inaugurated in 2009 and features an extra-ordinary statue of an American Eagle holding the American Flag (donated by alumnus Michael Carricarte), a plaque with the names of alumni who have served or are serving, and a wall with famous patriotic quotes. A new plaque with updated names of alumni was installed at this year’s ceremony.

The guest speaker was the legendary former CCHS teacher, Dr. Carter Burrus (Class of 1962) and former U.S. Navy Officer. The University of Miami’s Color Guard raised the American Flag, the Columbus School Band played the National Anthem, and Columbus senior Matt DeFranks read his Honorable Mention winning Essay “Being an American.”
It was an event that made the entire Columbus family very proud.
